WHITHER THE CAPITALS OF CULTURE?
The EC has announced another consultation, this time onthe future of the European Capitals of Culture (ECOC). It will last from 27.10.2010 to 12.01.2011. 2010 marks the 25th anniversary of the European Capitals of Culture (ECoC) and there is a large consensus that in these 25 years, the ECoC have become one of the most ambitious cultural events in Europe, both in scope and scale. They have also become one of the most visible initiatives of the EU and probably one of the most appreciated by European citizens. The current rules of the ECoC ( Decision 1622/2006/EC) list the countries entitled to host the title until 2019. As the selection procedure for a ECoC starts six years in advance (the selection for the 2016 ECoC is currently underway), it is necessary to think now about how the scheme should be continued beyond this period.
