COPYRIGHT CRIME CANNOT BE THEFT…

A letter to the editor in a recent issue of The Guardian (UK) makes some interesting points about copyright: “your article… spread a misunderstanding by speaking of “copyright theft”, a legal absurdity. Since a copyright is an abstraction with no specific physical embodiment, there is no way to steal one. It is possible to defraud someone of a copyright, but fraud is not theft. It you are talking about unauthorised copying, that may or may not be copyright infringement, and copyright infringement is sometimes a crime. But it is never theft.”
