IF YOU’VE NEVER BEEN TO OREGON…

On 11-13 February 2011 the Visual Culture Symposium will be held in Portland, Oregon, USA. The purpose of the symposium is to explore the topic of sustainability, particularly in using Portland as a source for uncovering the systemic relationships of sustainability and visual/material culture. Arts Educators from all over the nation will gather each morning to discuss issues of sustainability and bio-regionalism framed by questions such as, "What philosophical or theoretical structures might we use to better understand and engage sustainability within the context of visual/material cultural and more specifically, within art education? " Later in the day groups will have the opportunity to encounter Portland on foot to further investigate the impact Portland's cultural life has on sustainable planning and practices.
